DOROTHY HOOD

The Celestial Fields of Dorothy Hood

Opening Reception September 12, 2009

6:00-8:00 pm

As an artist and a pure colorist, Hood was enraptured with space. She was an explorer of both inner and outer space. She sought out the inner space and translated it into her work through the study of eastern philosophies and meditative practices. In regards to the imagery of outer space, noted Houston art critic Ann Holmes quoted Hood saying, “I was painting outer space before NASA started.”

Towards the end of her life, Dorothy was concerned about how her work would live on. Towards that end, she always tried to save the pieces she liked best for herself. The paintings chosen for this show “The Celestial Fields of Dorothy Hood” are part of that personal legacy of art.

Hood has had solo exhibitions at The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, The Everson Museum, Syracuse, NY, The McNay Art Institute, San Antonio, and The Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi.

Her works are in the permanent collections of The Menil Foundation, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The National Gallery, Washington D.C., The Brooklyn Museum, The Whitney Museum, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The San Francisco Museum of Modern art, The Dallas Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and many more.
